About Christopher Ward

Christopher Ward began in 2004, when friends Mike France, Peter Ellis, and Chris Ward — an ex-toy-company executive, a former colleague, and a T-shirt importer — decided to build a watch brand that sold directly online rather than through traditional retail. Their first watches launched in 2005, designed in England and manufactured in Switzerland, at prices well below equivalent Swiss watches sold through a dealer network.

Direct-to-Consumer and the Calibre SH21

In 2008, Christopher Ward partnered with the Swiss movement maker Synergies Horlogères, fully merging with it in 2014 — the same year it unveiled the Calibre SH21, a COSC-certified automatic movement with a 120-hour (5-day) power reserve. Development had started back in 2009 under watchmaker Johannes Jahnke, and the SH21 became the first commercially viable mechanical movement designed and built in Britain in over 50 years.

The Twelve and the Bel Canto

The Twelve, an integrated-bracelet sports watch with an angular, faceted case, became one of Christopher Ward's most talked-about references, with the Twelve X (Ti) built to mark the SH21's tenth anniversary. The C1 Bel Canto pushed further into complicated territory: its FS01 movement, named after technical director Frank Stelzer, took three years to develop and adds a chiming mechanism — a genuinely difficult complication to execute well — at a fraction of what haute-horlogerie chiming watches typically cost.

Three In-House Calibres

Christopher Ward now fields three in-house movements, an unusual depth for a brand at this price. The SH21 (2014) was the first: a COSC-certified automatic with a 120-hour, five-day power reserve, developed with watchmaker Johannes Jahnke. The FS01 (2022) added a mechanical hour-chime — the complication that earned the C1 Bel Canto its GPHG prize. In March 2026 the brand launched the CW-002, its first in-house True GMT, built on the existing CW-001 architecture: seven parts modified, sixteen new, keeping the same 120-hour reserve across twin barrels without adding case height. It's COSC-certified to -4/+6 seconds a day, runs at 4 Hz, and is finished with a rhodium-plated bridge, a skeletonized tungsten rotor and Côtes de Genève striping visible through an exhibition caseback — debuting in the 40.5mm, 100m-rated C63 Sealander True GMT from €3,950 on rubber.

The GPHG Breakthrough

The C1 Bel Canto launched on 1 November 2022; the first run of 300 pieces sold out within hours. A year later it won the Petite Aiguille at the 2023 Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève, beating entries from Bulgari and Tudor in a category covering watches priced CHF 2,000–8,000, judged by a panel led by watch journalist Nick Foulkes — the first time any British brand won at the GPHG. The line has since grown into an open series (Cielo, Noir, Purple, Rosa), a 300-piece Bel Canto Classic Negroni limited edition with a femto-laser guilloché dial around $4,995–5,340, and 2026's Bel Canto Lumière Nova.
